Cleaning a short dryer vent run yourself
If your dryer vents directly through an exterior wall behind it, you can clean it. If it routes through walls or attic, call us.
What you'll learn
- How to tell a short DIY-able vent run from a long pro job
- The right tool for the job (flexible vent brush kit, $35 at hardware stores)
- Why the lint screen frame matters as much as the screen itself
- When dry times tell you the vent needs professional attention
Step by step
- Unplug the dryer (and turn off gas valve if gas-powered).
- Pull dryer away from the wall. Disconnect the vent at the back.
- Run a flexible vent brush from the dryer end through to the exterior hood.
- Vacuum out the dryer connection point and the lint screen housing.
- Replace flex-foil with rigid metal vent if you find any (code requirement).
If your vent runs longer than 10 feet, has multiple elbows, or goes through walls, ceilings, or the roof — call us. Lint past the first elbow needs rotary brushing with vacuum collection at the dryer end.
