How to choose a chimney cap that lasts
A $25 galvanized cap rusts through in 5 years near the coast. A $250 stainless cap lasts the life of the chimney.
What you'll learn
- The four cap materials (galvanized, painted, stainless, copper) and their real lifespans
- Why CalFire requires spark-arrester mesh in most of inland San Diego County
- How to size a single-flue cap (measure the flue, add 1" clearance)
- When you need a multi-flue cap or a chase cover instead
Step by step
- Measure the outside dimensions of the flue tile (or chase opening).
- Decide on material — stainless is the right default in San Diego.
- Verify the mesh is 12-gauge or heavier with 3/8"–1/2" openings (CalFire spec).
- Confirm the cap fits the crown profile — flush mount or band style.
- For multi-flue chimneys, plan one cap per flue OR a single multi-flue cap.
In any High or Very High Fire Severity Zone — most of inland San Diego County — spark arrester mesh is mandatory. Insurance carriers may require proof.
